Placement Meetings
15-30 minute meetings or phone calls with parent or guardian and director will be held before camp to help place girls in combos and set workshop topics.
Prerequisites
Some proficiency on your instrument and the desire to have fun working on jazz skills with other young women. No previous jazz experience needed. More about proficiencies.
Proficiencies
At minimum, a basic proficiency on your instrument through previous private instruction (not required for vocalists):
- Pitched Instruments—Major and minor scale knowledge in a few common keys.
- Percussion—Some rhythmic facility with duplet and triplet subdivisions and ability to keep fairly steady time. Previous study on drum set may not be required.
- Voice—Ability to sing in tune and memorize songs. Previous experience singing with instruments is not required.

Director/instructor Erik Hanson, all age, beginning and intermediate jazz studies specialist. Jazz big sisters and additional instructors tba from Seattle's jazz communities.

- Jazz Combo Playing
- Workshops—topics based on campers' needs: Ear Training, Harmony/Theory, Rhythm, Composing, Notation & Reading, Listening & Jazz History
12-1 pm
- Lunch and Jam Session with Jazz Big Sisters
1-3 pm
- Women in Jazz: In History & Today
- Workshops, or One-to-One Time
- Jazz Combo Playing
Camp Concert Friday!
Location
Up-Beat Girls Jazz Camp will be held at Jazz Night School, a music-house setting in Southeast Seattle near Columbia City.
